The Dark Horse Project, Album Review

The Dark Horse Project are a 3 piece from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Frontwoman Liv Mueller formed the act after her previous band The Lovelies disbanded. She pulled in Josh Rickun on Bass and Dan Niedziejko on percussion to create that tight sound she was looking for. Once they were happy with their rough demo's, they took off to record their self titled album. The album was produced by Grant Curry and Marc Hutner who were formerly of the band Pleasure Club.

TDHP's sound is predominately an indie scuzzy angular mixture. Liv Mueller's voice is a perfect fit to the sound and is also reminiscent to the Britpop days of Elastica and Sleeper. One thing we always think is a positive point is the way a singer can change the tone of her voice so that it can be aligned with the mood of the song.
This can be heard in the accoustic track Unrequited and the beauty that is Serenade.

Comparing the styles that TDHP use. We would prefer to see them to make more songs that are dark and edgy, as this is where they are in their element. When we say that 75% of the record is very appealing, but songs like This Is Now and Danger may be pleasing to the ear but lack the diversity that the rest of the album measures up to. Of course this is only the debut, so slight teething problems are to be expected.

If you live in the Milwaukee area, make sure to check out The Dark Horse Project to see if they sound as good live as they do on their record.
